Keyword Rich Domain Names and PPC Marketing

Keyword Rich Domain Names and PPC Marketing

By Jim Patterson

The benefits of Keyword Rich Domain Names is obvious from several different standpoints. A domain name that tells you what the underlying site is about will do better with offline marketing efforts for obvious reasons. The benefits from an SEO standpoint are there, but somewhat limited to the keywords contained in the domain itself. The importance of the domain in PPC (PayPerClick) Marketing campaigns is becoming more clear every day.

Marketing products and services via PPC campaigns gets more competitive by the second, so any thing that lowers your cost per click is important. And raising your CTR (Click Through Rate) will lower your cost per click by raising your quality rating on Google. More and more of the PPC Gurus like Perry Marshall and Frank Kern are talking about the importance of the domain used in a PPC ad. Anything that gives that ad more credibility will raise the CTR, and there are really only three parts to any PPC ad.

  • The Headline
  • The Ad Text
  • The URL to Click

There is quite a bit of information available about addressing the first two, and not that much thought has been given to the last one until recently. Here are a few things to remember when choosing a domain name to use in PayPerClick Marketing Campaigns:

  • .com Extensions Are Preferable - No surprise here. A .com extension at the end of your domain name gives the impression of being a well established site or company. This is pretty much accepted, but I am finding that more and more of my domains with other extensions are doing well as the .com extensions with good keyword combinations get scarcer. I will always go with a .com domain name over others, but will take a domain with good keywords and another extension over any extensions without good keywords.
  • Capitalize the Keywords In Your PPC Ads - So keywordphrase.com is not as good as KeywordPhrase.com Split testing will bear out that you will just get more clicks this way. The difference can be more than a 300% increase in your Click Through Rate. Again, this will raise your Google Quality Score and therefore lower you cost per click.
  • www-KeywordPhrase.com Rush - As Keyword Rich Domain Names get more and more scarce, little tricks like this become more important. Throwing a www- in front of the keywords you want can give you more choices in the escalating Domain Name grab. Testing shows that there seems to be little effect on the positive affect that comes from having good keywords in your domain.

Using Keyword Rich Domain Names makes more and more sense when you examine the results regardless of what methods of marketing you use. Apply these tips and tricks and your results will show this. When your profitability can hang on a difference of just a few percentage points, it pays to grab any advantage you can find. Using Keyword Rich Domain Names makes more sense every day...

PPC Advertising – Risk vs Reward

With the proliferation of programs like those of Frank Kern and a slew of others, the PPC (or PayPerClick) method of driving traffic to your websites and affiliate landing pages is front and center for many internet marketers.  Whether you are currently using PPC marketing techniques or have yet to take the plunge, weighing the risks against the rewards is important.

The rewards may seem obvious to many, but let's be clear about them:

  • Targeted Traffic - Whatever traffic you get as a result of PPC campaigns will be targeted by your choice of keywords.
  • Unlimited Traffic - Maybe not actually unlimited, but PPC campaigns can be the largest traffic source of any kind.
  • Statistics - You can easily track which of your PPC campaigns are working and which are not.  The very nature of running PPC campaigns mean this happens almost automatically.  This can be fine tuned, and should be.
  • Controlled Costs - You decide what you are willing to spend for a visitor for each and every one of your keywords, as well as setting a Daily Budget for each of your PPC campaigns.

There are obviously more benefits to using PPC advertising campaigns for targeted traffic generation, but we will stop there for now.

As with most things in life, the Pros and the Cons on a given topic are closely related.  Consider these risks regarding PPC marketing and you will see what I mean.

  • Targeted Traffic - If you go too narrow in your keyword choices, you can end up with such a small amount of traffic (or even none) that it becomes nearly impossible to meet your sales goals, or even to analyze the results statistically.
  • Unlimited Traffic - This means that your PPC campaigns will be competing with the big boys, and these battles can get more than a little nasty.  Carefully monitor your campaigns, and if you see something that smells funny, talk to and account manager with whichever PPC search engine is involved.
  • Statistics - There is so much information available that many get Analysis Paralysis.  You need to strike a balance that allows you to MAKE decisions, not hinder them.
  • Controlled Costs - If you don't control both your keyword bids, and the daily budget of each and every one of your PPC campaigns, you will find that you have either eaten up all of your profits or spent your entire savings on what will most likely turn out to have been largely useless traffic.

On whatever topic you care to discuss you will find that the best course you can follow is one of Balance.

A favorite saying of mine is that "Nothing is as Good as it seems, and Nothing is as Bad as it seems."

This is doubly true of the realm of PPC Advertising.  Venturing into this arena can be richly rewarding, or disastrously costly.  The only way to ensure a positive experience is to educate yourself on these issues extensively, or pay someone to run your PPC Marketing efforts for you.

If you spend any time at all doing Internet Marketing work, one day you will eventually decide it is time to take the plunge into PPC Advertising.  Not really a surprise, as it is without a doubt the largest single source of traffic available to the Internet Marketer.  And initially you will most likely fail to achieve your PPC (Pay Per Click) Advertising goals.  Hey I know I did.  And failed huge!

The PPC Advertising arena is without a doubt the toughest nut to crack, as well as being the arena with the toughest competition.  And with the possible exception of SEO work, has the toughest technical learning curve as well.

Now, having said all that I will also tell you that it is something that you should definitely tackle, as there is simply no other place to go for the targeted traffic that we are all looking for.  But I am NOT saying that you should wade in blindly (as I did initially)  or you will quickly find yourself out of cash with little usable traffic wondering WTF happened!

If you want to learn about PPC Advertizing from the ground up and learn all of the tricks of the trade thoroughly enough to hire yourself out as a PPC Guru, then you should grab everything you can find by the likes of Perry Marshall and Frank Kern, hide yourself away for a couple of weeks and study, study, study...

However, if what you want is to be able to get your PPC Ad campaigns up quickly, cost effectively and productively then you need one of the myriad of new software solutions that can automate much of what you will learn from the above guru-types.

This isn't to say that these PPC Software applications are only for beginners. Experienced PPC Marketers will likewise find their costs plummeting and their Click Through Rates climbing to unexperienced levels.

My favorite so far has to be Keyword ESP which is fairly new, but does the job amazingly.  I found few bugs, and easy to follow video tutorials got me up and running in no time.  I won't spend a lot of time here extolling the virtues of this software.  Suffice it to say that it will do an admirable job for Internet Marketers of any PPC experience level.

Whatever way you decide to go, don't fail at PPC by never trying it.

There simply is no other place to go and find the hordes of hungry targeted traffic you crave.

(Gotta go check my stats now, cya!)

Meanwhile, take a look at this video about Keyword ESP:
