How to Protect Your Website From Hackers

Website HackerAs a website owner, there may be nothing scarier than having your website hacked. Even if you don’t collect credit card information on your site, or maintain any personal information about your visitors, simply having your website corrupted can destroy the countless hours of work you’ve put in gaining your visitors trust and establishing a reputation for yourself.

If you do collect credit card information or personal information and that information gets stolen, then your potential problems are even greater.

While there’s probably no way to make your website completely hacker-proof, there are a few steps you can take to minimize the chance that you become a victim.

Get Up To Date. And Stay Up to Date

First, if you use a website framework like WordPress or Drupal you need to make sure you’re always using the most up-to-date version. Because WordPress is a very popular framework, there are many attacks made upon it, in order to discover and exploit weaknesses in the code.

Fortunately, WordPress makes updates and security fixes available very quickly. However, you still need to make sure you actually download and install the current version updates. The older your WordPress code is, the more vulnerable you are to a hacker attack. You should receive a notification in your WordPress dashboard every time you log in. Be sure to pay attention to this.

Download from Trustworthy Sources

Second, make sure to only download and install widgets and plug-ins for your website from trustworthy sources. If you use WordPress, you should generally be safe in using plug-ins that are available on the WordPress plug-in directory (http://www.wordpress.org/extend/plugins/) and which have at least several positive reviews.

No Pirated Software

It should go without saying, but do not use unauthorized or “pirated” copies of any software or WordPress themes or plug-ins to run your website or any of its components. Many times these unauthorized copies are made available by individuals who have taken licensed copies of the software, “cracked” any protection schemes on it, and then inserted their own malicious code before making the software package available for free on the Internet.

It can sometimes be next to impossible to detect this malicious code, even if you are looking for it. Attacks that are launched from this type of corrupted software can make your website a tool for numerous criminal activities. This can happen without knowing it.

Proper Passwords

Regardless of what software you’ve used to build your website, make sure that all of your administrator passwords (as well as the passwords for your webhosting account) are not obvious. Avoid usernames like “admin”, “administrator”, or your name. Those are the first things a hacker would guess.

Similarly, make your actual passwords at least nine digits long, using a combination of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers and symbols. Most people tend to put their number characters as either the first or last character of the password, so avoid this habit as well.

Dedicated Hosting

Finally, if you run a large website, or one which generates a fair amount of revenue for you, consider buying a dedicated hosting solution. These solutions are more expensive than the entry level “shared” hosting services that most of us purchase when we first launch our websites.

However, dedicated servers will not be subject to hacking to the same degree as shared hosting. Because a shared server may host hundreds of websites from various customers (or more), if one of those other sites becomes compromised, then your site is potentially at risk.

The most important piece of advice is to always be vigilant in protecting yourself. The threat of your website being hacked is a constant one.

Social Entrepreneurship

Social Entrepreneurship

I came across the term Social Entrepreneurship yesterday while talking with the head of a 501C3 organization yesterday here in Tampa, and it really set my mind to working.  Being an MLM and direct sales marketing professional, in many ways I have been a Social Entrepreneur all along. But this conversation really got me to examine very closely the role that Social Entrepreneurship can play in offering free market solutions to problems frequently left to Federal Government agencies to solve.

Let's get a better understanding about this by taking a look at what Wikipedia has to say about Social Entrepreneurship:

______________________________________________________

Social Entrepreneurship is the work of social entrepreneurs. A social entrepreneur recognizes a social problem and uses entrepreneurial principles to organize, create and manage a venture to achieve social change (a social venture). While a business entrepreneur typically measures performance in profit and return, a social entrepreneur focuses on creating social capital. Thus, the main aim of social entrepreneurship is to further social and environmental goals. Social entrepreneurs are most commonly associated with the voluntary and not-for-profit sectors [1], but this need not preclude making a profit. Social entrepreneurship practised with a world view or international context is called international social entrepreneurship.[2] See also Corporate Social Entrepreneurship.

______________________________________________________

To my way of thinking, and particularly with the political and economic climate in the world right now, the profit side is as important as the social capital side.

Why?

Because in the long run, if it isn't profitable it won't be sustainable in the toughest times, which is exactly when such things are most needed!

Let me challenge you for a second:  Think of a charity or a cause that you believe in.  It doesn't matter what it is really.  The environment, a religious organization, the homeless…

Now ask yourself:  Are they likely to be finding it easier or harder to accomplish their goals right now.  With rampant unemployment, contributions are down across the board, and it looks like Federal funding is about to become very hard to come by.  Even volunteerism goes down when people are forced to work more than one job.

Find a problem and you will usually find an opportunity!

So if an organization or a cause lacks funding, then to put it into a more free enterprise vernacular they lack income.  And as MLM and Direct Sales Professionals we know a thing or two about creating income!

It has been less than 24 hours since I had the conversation with the head of that 501C3 organization and I've already started putting together marketing campaigns and strategies to capitalize on what I think can be a very active, productive and profitable niche in my MLM and Direct Sales business.

I've already got the framework in place for programs with the 911 Gascard Program and The Only Government Approved Money Generating System On Facebook.

Check out either or both and then call me about setting up a campaign to create income for yourself, and the cause or organization you would like to assist in these unique times.

MultiLevel Marketing – MLM And The Matching Coded Bonus
By Jim Patterson

I remember back in the nineties hearing about people involved in the MLM known as Excel Communications building these enormous monthly checks. People said it was because they were an MLM that had such a great product. And while they did have an outstanding product, that was not really why people were able to get their residual incomes to such astounding levels.

Excel is, of course gone now as their product (long distance phone service) was made obsolete by VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) and the resulting free long distance service we enjoy today. We can still look at their pay plan though and learn by it what it was that was different about how Excel members were compensated.

I have talked with several people that were involved back then and with one or two exceptions, the Excel Comp Plan was not that different than we see in the industry today. Without fail however, each and every person mentioned one specific aspect of the plan. And they had a story to tell about someone in their team (sometimes LOTS of people in their team) who were able to exploit to create life changing residual income.

The Matching Coded Bonus – This is what it was called. And I heard stories about teachers building seven figure monthly incomes. I heard of many people building seven figure annual incomes, and uncounted numbers of people that were able to build six figure incomes for the first time in their lives.

Here is how it worked -

When a new rep started to build their team of personal enrollees, the first three were assigned or "coded" to someone above them. Who that was will become apparent shortly.

From the fourth enrollee on, each and every one of the people enrolled by that person were coded to them. And therefore, the first three enrollees that THEY brought into the business got coded to them, as opposed to the individual that enrolled them.

Remember that this coding was only for the purposes of the Matching Coded Bonus, which was paid like this:

As with most MLM comp plans, there was a fast start bonus paid to the enrollee at the time a new person made their qualifying purchase. A matching amount was paid to whoever that enroller was coded to.

So the important part of this is that the enroller was the one coded to someone. And from that point on, for each and every person that enroller signed into the business, the person they were coded to earned a Matching Coded Bonus.

Since the first three people sponsored by "Rep X" after he (or she) sponsored their own first three get "Coded" to "RepX", he then got this bonus on each and every enrollee that those people signed up to infinity. So by it's nature this coded team grew exponentially.

So as you can see, Excel's product, while excellent was only half the story. The real power behind the massive residual income their members were able to create was the Matching Coded Bonus. Coupling another excellent product (hopefully one not destined to obsolescence) would be a dynamite combination that would make it possible to create Excel's results but for a much longer time.

There is such a company operating right now!

They have a product that cannot become obsolete, and a dynamite comp plan including Matching Coded Bonuses!

Easy Squeeze Pages & Video Squeeze Pages

Squeeze Pages have become a staple in internet marketing and it doesn't look like they are going anyplace soon!

At it's most basic, a squeeze page is any webpage with a relatively small or short message accompanied by a call to action like an opt-in box or in some cases even a Buy It Now button.

Recently more and more of these are Video Squeeze Pages where the short message is in the form of a video embedded to one side of the page, or sometimes even above the call to action. During the past year I've noticed a trend toward much longer videos, and refinements such as delaying the appearance of the call to action item.

These kinds of changes in the basic Squeeze Page formula don't really change the fact the at heart, most of these types of webpages are relatively simple, and extremely effective ways to market your own, or affiliate products and services.

Putting this type of page together has been something that many marketers wish they had access to in a quick and easy fashion, and there are some great products out there with templates. These are sometimes way too niche specific, needlessly complicated, or just plain expensive.

On this page I'll be showing you a very simple to use, easily customizable Squeeze Page creation tool that goes for just $7!! READ ON

As internet marketing tools go, this one looks like a winner.   This is a new product just coming available this week, and boasts a pretty good suite of tools at very advantageous pricing for the serious internet marketer.

  • Email Autoresponder – There is no upcharge regardless of how large your list gets with Zilergy.  They also have some great email templates that will give your ezine, newsletters and emails a very professional look without athe heavy html that is getting blocked in many cases.  Upload your logo to one of their templates, compose your email in the simple wywiwyg editor and you are off to the races!
  • Mobile Marketing – Marketing to your prospects via their cellphones is extremely hot right now, but with the heavy regulations out their it isn't surprising that there have been relatively few companies venture into the niche.  That is changing, but many are struggling with pricing structure.  Zilergy's is pretty straight forward.  You pay $50/yr for each keyword (Use these by having people text it to a shortcode) and $50/thousand bulk texts.  That comes to just 5 cents/text.  Most companies are charging monthly for the keywords ($25 average) and between 12 and 20 cents per text until you reach volume levels.  Beware of unlimited bulk text offers as there are hard costs involved with this type of text marketing.
  • Social Media Listen & Engage -  Most people will immediately say:  "Oh, I can get this free in so many places!"  Zilergy currently just has a handful of social sites set up now, but there are 12 more in the queue being installed now and the initial goal is 40.  The search or "Listen" tool isn't limited to the sites you can "Engage" with and rivals most of the tools I have seen results wise.  I've spoken with the software developers personally and would ask you to look at the platform and see where the logical next steps will take them (Think Traffic Geyser nd maybe even Content Crooner).

At heart what Zilergy has here is a platform that can accomodate an ever expanding group of tools.  The dashboard is easy to navigate, and the interfaces are simple to use.  Autoresponder users may feel that the workflow is not what they are used to, but in the end will find this to be more versatile in the end.

Pricing:

Zilergy Professional:  $100/Month – Includes One Keyword for Mobile Marketing and 1,000 Premium Text Messages.

Zilergy Access:              $50/Month – Only available to Zilergy Business Leaders*

*Zilergy is marketing this with a hybrid business model.  The Business Leader position is a part of the Binary Matrix in their MLM business model.  Their products may also be sold through sales reps working on commissions.

How to Escape the PageRank Drama

Google PageRank BarWe all know about that mysterious green pagerank bar that brings rewards like extra money for selling links or immense bragging rights that draw the envy of all others in your niche. We’re talking about the green bar that marks your Google PageRank and determines where you rank within your competitive niche. If this green bar has been ruling your daily life for far too long, you will be glad to hear that Google is talking about taking this PageRank feature away completely.

The PageRank that you see when you click onto a website has been part of the alogorithm used to rank websites and many people have been overwhelmed for years chasing a higher rank. Now, Google is claiming this is actually an unimportant detail that might be done away with completely.

An Image of the PageRank Past

PageRanks only change when Google does an export of data to the public domain. This doesn’t happen very often which means that your PageRank is not updated very often. That rank you are chasing is actually an image of the past that doesn’t tell you anything about what Google thinks of your website today.

When you hear people claiming to have found some massively successful secret to jumping ranks in a very short period of time they usually just got lucky and Google happened to do an update right after they started the new promotion. They didn’t actually make the huge PageRank leap out of that one promotion alone.

It’s the same thing when it comes to PageRanks that seem to sit at zero for months on end. Google just hasn’t done an export yet.

Stop the PageRank Drama

So, Google has come out in the open about the worthlessness of the PageRank, but most people continue to chase higher rankings. Why go through the drama for something that is worthless?

Many people simply don’t understand what a PageRank is. They think that if they can get a high PR they will be ranked highly by Google. Unfortunately, this just isn’t the way it works with Google. There are many PR1 websites that blow some PR5 websites out of the water when it comes to actual Google ranking.

It is also often believed that receiving inbound links from sites with high PageRank will deliver higher search engine rankings. Once again, this just isn’t always the case. There is no guarantee that you will get higher PR yourself or higher rankings in the search engines.

Of course, much of the PR allure comes down to seeing how you stack up to others within your niche. When you have a high PR you feel like you are doing things correct and beating out the competition. When you get stuck at zero you feel exactly the opposite and may trash a completely good site. It’s all drama that makes you feel great or lousy about your efforts.

You may enjoy bragging about your high PR sites, but mainly you feel like you aren’t wasting your time or money when the PR continually rises. You have hope for the future and feel like you are doing a great job. It’s very rewarding on this level to participate in the PageRank drama.

The problem is your PR has nothing to do with your rate of traffic or your conversion rates. Those are the things that really determine if you are doing a great job but they are not taken into account for your PR. I’m no longer impressed just by high PageRank, but I am impressed when a lower rank is pulling in thousands of visitors and dollars of profit every month.

I am impressed by the earnings potential and real results of a site. In my opinion, those are the things we should all be comparing and bragging about, not just the PageRank
