One of the biggest challenges facing every aspiring marketer whether online or off line is how to get a share, or better still the lions’ share of their market place.

For online marketers, getting their website main search phrases to the first page of the major search engines is undoubtedly the surest way to get a goodly share of the market place.

The other benefit to gaining first page in the search engines is that once you are there, your advertising budget can be reduced very dramatically.

So how much does it cost to get your main search phrases to appear on the first page of google?

This will depend upon whether you do the work yourself, or whether you hire an SEO company to do it for you.

An SEO company will charge you anywhere from $30 per month to a straight fee of several thousand dollars. Is it worth it? Well if you can’t do it yourself and they can give you (or are prepared to give you) a cast iron guarantee – in writing – that if they fail to get you that page 1 rank for your most important key phrases, then yes, it most likely is worth it.

However, before you go rushing off with your credit card in hand, spend a moment or two considering if you could perhaps do it yourself.

The principle of getting your site to page 1 is fairly straight forward.

You need your website to be well constructed, fast loading and search engine spider friendly.

The website needs to contain your key phrases in the body text of your information and preferably in the title too.
You need to have thousands of other websites linking to you. But just linking to you alone will not do the job. They need to link to you with anchor texts that represent your main search phrases, and not just any old site. The sites need to be relevant to your topic and not link farms. Higher page rank counts too.

You need to be found in the social bookmarking sites such as dig and Del.ici.ous and as many others as possible.

There is a lot more that you will need to do.

In fact you are going to need to spend some time with this, and you will need to do some study work.

Now for the good news: There are a lot of tools that can help you with all of this if you decide to DIY. Some are free and some need to be paid for. Just remember that before you pay for anything, expensive is no guarantee of quality, but nor is cheap.

Do your homework before you fork out your hard earned cash for anything.
